From then to now
Pierian Spring Studio
Growing up in a small town in NW Indiana I had great aspirations. At 8 years old listening on a 45 record to "Chewy" by "Ohio Express" on my General Electric record player I wanted to play music and sing songs. But the dream of seriously playing music began during the winter of 1987 with my cousin Michael E. Graham as we were each learning how to play an instrument. Mike played the electric guitar and I played the acoustic guitar and my Casio keyboard. We played poorly but had a lot of fun doing it nonetheless. At first we called ourselves "The Relatives" but soon after we changed our name to reflect our musical styles to "Loud Silence". By September of that year I headed back to college to finish my architectual degree and Mike joined the National Guard. And so ended the dream of the two of us doing an album together.
But my dream of playing music continued to grow. I then started writing and recording music the summer of 1989 after I graduated college and met my friend Steve Roach (Berkana Roachi). For 4 years we planned and talked and dreamed. During that time I purchased a better keyboard and a Tascam Portastudio. While my interest in music grew, my architectural/civil engineering career was still in its infancy. So I went back to college at Purdue to continue my education. In the summer of 1993; I moved to Nashville TN to try my hand at music. I spent time on Music Row trying to sell myself as a singer/songwriter. I played for producers down the strip and signed minor agreements to sell my music on Music Row to interested parties. They would make promises to get my songs out to well known artists like Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton etc... But most were stringing me along. They expected me to pay them annual fees and told me I needed to suffer many many years to get anyone interested in me or my music. And what I wouldn't give to have Dolly Parton show interest in one of my songs. So after a year of limited success I headed back to Indiana leaving my dreams behind.
But a new path was mapped with the birth of Pierian Spring Studio. If I could not get Nashville to record my songs I would do it on my own and share my work with the world as a proud amateur. So I started purchasing studio equipment and building my recording studio. It started in Michigan City, Indiana in 1994 at 705 Franklin Street with my friend Steve Roach who wrote "Without a Heart to Hold" released on a future album. The 1st album released from the studio was "Twas The Ninty-Four Christmas "in 1995 with my friend Lew Timberlake playing the piano. The 2nd album was a solo release entitled "Time Away" in 1998. Steve and myself began writing and playing for the new album in 1995. But after two years we were going nowhere together so I pursued it on my own. After the album was released in early 1998 I began craving a closer connection with more motivated songwriters and artists so I moved to California in May of 1999.
In 2000 I began performing a 3 year gig at Ghirardeli Square in San Francisco and selling my albums. In 2001 I started writing and recording for my 3rd album and in 2003 "Mountains On The Moon" was released. At the same time the 3rd album was released I retired from public performing, bought a home in the Sierra Mountains of California and moved once again.
I wrote 4 new songs from 2004 to 2006 hoping to record another album by the end of 2007. But life side tracked me for a while and my music was put on the back burner. But then after 5 years of retirement from public performing and the release of "Mountains On The Moon" I did an open mic performance in 2008 for fun at a local coffee shop in Somerset, CA. Fueling my songwriting and recording interest once again I wrote and recorded 8 more songs and in 2010 my 4th album "New Sunrise" was released. In 2013 I began writing for my next album. I became side tracked once again as 9 years passed by from the release of the album "New Sunrise". I felt it was time I finished what I started in 2013 so in June of 2019 I picked up my guitar, paper and pencil and started writing once again.
While writing new songs for this latest album I got back into the studio and started recording the previously written material spending the entire summer of 2019 writing and recording. With my 5th studio album just around the corner I asked a few friends and artists from my past to join me and help bring this new album to life. In doing so it spawned the group name "The False Roomers". The new album "Caught In A Moment" release date was June 20, 2020.
In May of 2020 during the covid pandemic I decided to start recording and filming a number of cover videos and self written songs. After I worked on the songs I felt it would be nice to upload these videos to YouTube and share them with the world. The 15 song set was entitled "Songs By The Fire". I spent 2 years uploading them and the project was completed in August of 2023.
During the summer of 2021 "Loud Silence", after 34 years; got together in Grizzly Flats CA and played cover songs together. We enjoyed a couple of days playing and reminiscing on the past back in Indiana. Who knows, maybe one day "Loud Silence" will collaborate on a song or an album together.
On August 17th 2021 my home in Grizzly Flats CA, was destroyed by the Caldor fire along with my recording studio. The forest fire rushed in from Omo Ranch giving us 15 minutes to escape. 2/3rds of the town was gone in a matter of hours. I left Grizzly Flats behind and started over in southern CA. I decided not to rebuild or return to Grizzly Flats and am now enjoying living in Southern CA.
I spent the month of October back in MI and IN after my father passed away on October 7th 2023. My father enjoyed playing the guitar and singing as well but he had not played in years. He gave me his 1960s Kay guitar and his 1959 Gibson back in 2016 and I will treasure that moment for the rest of my life.
I am always working in the studio on a new project. So please continue to follow me and see where life takes me on my next musical journey.
